15Mar Haier 7 Inch monitor, $44 and it works.
A number of you sent e-mails requesting a full review of the Haier 7″ HLT71 monitor. So I went ahead and picked one up. As you can see it showed up today and I must say I’m pleasantly surprised. First thing to note is that it’s actually lighter and thinner (1/4″ thinner) then my Lilliput monitor. It also has a wide screen mode that allows you to use the whole screen. I wouldn’t color correct or set my exposure based on this monitor, but for framing and monitoring on a large screen this should do the trick.
I was actually expecting it to be larger with the on board speakers, so it’s nice to see that it’s the same size as my Lilliput monitor. I also tested the built in headphone amp and it works quit well with magic lantern.
On the down side the threads on the bottom of the monitor aren’t quit 1/4″ 20 so I had to give it a little bit of love to mount the Haier 7″ HLT71 monitor on my . It also crops a little bit on the top and the bottom of the monitor, which cuts off part of the magic lantern audio monitor bar, not all of it but about a quarter of it.
I’ve got it on the charger right now and once I get some time to do some more testing I’ll post a full video review. For now, it works, it’s affordable, and it picks up PBS in my living room. Now I just need to hunt down a battery source.

thnx

Yes, it comes with a power adapter you can use to plug into the wall.

Hey. what is the resolution of that monitor? (or the apparent monitor)
I’m looking some cheaps chineses monitor and I’d like to know if that is “special”
Thanks 🙂

Correction
*aparent resolution

I couldn’t find any actual spec’s on it. A few sites list it as 800×480, but I’m not sure if that is correct. There isn’t anything in the manual on it.

Does it have the resolution necessary to allow sharp focusing better and easier than the camera LCD or do I need the HD resoluion as in the Liliput?
July 4th, 2011 at 6:00 pm
If you want sharp focus, I would spend the extra and get the Lilliput monitor. The Haier does the job, but it’s not amazing.

great, but i have the t3i and it has only the minihdmi. havent found the hdmi / rca cable with good performance.. sucks.
July 5th, 2011 at 2:52 pm
If I remember right, you just need the usb to RCA adapter cable for the t3i. I believe the cable is called a AVC-DC400 ($8). The AVC-DC400ST ($25) will also work and gives you stereo audio output instead of mono.
Hope that helps.

I just got this monitor, do you know what kind of cord i need to hook it up to my 7d? and where on online I can buy it?
July 15th, 2011 at 8:41 am
There is a USB port just above the HDMI port on your Canon 7d that works with a USB to RCA adapter. A lot of cameras come with the cable in the box but if you don’t have/can’t find yours the cable is called AVC DC400 and it cost about $8.
You can also use the AVC-DC400ST which is just a stereo version of the first cable marked up about $20.

The monitor is not working with my Sony NEX 5. Sony nex 5 is mini HDMI, so i got a mini hdmi to hdmi adapter and a hdmi to rca video component cable. I did not get video or sound. Any help? Thank you

The Haier monitor only excepts standard definition signals. I don’t think the Sony NEX-5 has a port that puts out standard definition. You’ll most likely need a HDMI monitor.

Good afternoon.
I have some time interested in buying a Lilliput and coincidentally today I saw a video of you on youtube, pulling the thread I found your site and have been reading about HAIER.
I have a question, not whether you’ve mentioned some post, so if so, sorry for not having it checked.
I have a Nikon D7000 with mini HDMI output and jack to RCA.
Apparently removing the A / V from the jack would be all solved, the problem is that in recording mode, the audio output is canceled.
Can you think of any way I can also monitor the audio with this monitor?

Hey, I saw your video and it prompted me to buy a hair monitor. I also have the newest version of ML on my T2i. When I plugged it all together, I loose the screen on the camera but there’s no signal to the monitor. Then I saw that the version I have of magic lantern disabled the external video! I see that you have it working; are you using an old version or do you know a trick I don’t know? Thanks!

So I wrote a comment on here asking a question that I solved by buying the correct cable. Who knew you could by the wrong mini USB to RCA cable. So ignore my earlier question. It’s working now. All is good.

Where can I get info on how to “fix” the 1/4 20 thread? I have 2 of these and they mount “sufficiently” but I’d be happier if I could get them flush.
Thanks!

I used a tap to fix the threads. You can find them at the hardware store for about $4.

Hey, thanks for all the great videos. You do great work! I have a question for you. I shoot with a Nikon D7000 and am trying to hook my Pro Am 7 inch monitor to the camera for live video recording. I can’t seem to get it working.
The only input/output on the camera and the monitor are 1/8th inch and I tried a cable I thought would work, but it doesn’t. I don’t know if I’m missing a setting or if it’s just not possible.
Thanks!

I’m just confused to if this comes with a charger so I can charge it ? Or would I have to buy that separately ? Also could I use the Pyle PLVHR75 7-Inch TFT Widescreen Headrest Monitor ? I’m not sure if that one has threads to mount to my accessories.
Have a good one 🙂

The pyle is pretty much the same monitor. The wall adapter that comes with the unit also charges the battery.
April 25th, 2013 at 5:47 pm
Will this work with the T4i? How about the audio on T4i too?
April 25th, 2013 at 5:52 pm
The display will work with your camera. As for audio you’ll have to check on magic lanterns site. Not all cameras are supported as far as audio goes.
