The first thing I tried to play around with this morning was controlling the Hero 3 with my cellphone. I installed the app, enabled wifi on the Hero 3 and got no connection. So I fumbled around in the pdf manual for a little while and found a section that says there is supposed to be a “phone & tablet” selection in the wifi menu.

So I looked around on the GoPro site and found this disclaimer.

GoPro app compatibility for the Black edition will be available on December 14, 2012.

It’s a little irritating when a “feature” is listed all over the packaging and on the website, but when you actually try to use it you find out that you’ll have to wait for a firmware update. December 14th isn’t that far off so it’s not a huge deal, but it is a little frustrating that I wont be able to test it out right away.

On a positive note, I was able to test out low light performance last night and in my first few tests it seems that the Hero 3 black edition in 2.7k mode kept up pretty well with the Canon t2i in terms of low light performance. By the time you scale the image down from 2.7k to 1080p it might even be a little bit better. I’ll post some comparison shots once I’ve done a little more testings but right now it’s looking very impressive. I’ll keep you posted.
