11Jun Seagate Barracuda 3TB hard drive $105
Building your own Freenas server or just need some more storage space? Amazon has the Seagate 3TB barracuda drives on sale for just $105 a peace. It’s always nice to see storage prices drop. If you need some space here’s the link. Of course the price drops only a few week after I bought more drives.

avoid using in a NAS, I bought 3 of these and all three failed almost exactly to the day a year after I put them into my readynas(technically 20 days before as I bought them June 22 2012). Now i’m trying to recover the data. Be wary of using these in a NAS server. I will be contacting seagate to activate the warranty.

I’ve been using the Seagate SV35 Series 3TB drives for almost a year now in my freenas server. So far so good. The SV35 series is an extra $40 but it comes with a 3 year warrenty and claims to handle nas and server apllications better.

If you’re after drives for NAS storage, you are better off paying a little more extra and getting drives that are designed for 24/7 use. These sorts of drives also tend to come with extended warranties, anything up to 3 or 5 years.
I bought 4x 3TB Western Digital RED drives for my ReadyNAS system. Although one drive failed (a brand new drive too), it is under warranty and will be getting replaced free of charge.

The SV35 series are supposed to be equivalent to RED drives, but you’re right, cheaper drives are sometimes not designed to take 24/7 use. One trick is to set the drive controller in Freenas to spin down the drives after 60 or 120 min. Many times I find shipping choice is the biggest problem. Drives usually fail for me if Fedex drops them off.

My ReadyNAS is set to turn itself off between 1am and 8am. I turn it off manually myself at other times. I did have the spin-down feature enabled but it kept spinning up and down by itself, and the constant clicking was annoying me.
My failed drive is ready to be shipped back to Western Digital. Fingers crossed the other 3 drives that were bought at the same time don’t decide to pack up too.
