02Mar Neewer DC-50 Field monitor, rebranded Viltrox DC-50?
The Neewer DC-50 field monitor (above) looks very similar to the Viltrox DC-50, the only major difference appears to the price. The Viltrox hovers around $200, while the Neewer DC-50 is closer to $120. Are they the same monitor?
The packaging for the Viltrox DC-50 looks identical to the Neewer DC-50 and if you look close on the Amazon product photos you can actually see the Viltrox logo on the packaging. I’m not sure if the Neewer models are B stock or just a rebranded Viltrox. Any body given the Neewer DC-50 a try?

DJ, I’d appreciate a guide or suggestions on a frugal and fast to set up dslr rig setup. As I get more advanced, I’d love to have a monitor, mount for led light, mount a videomic, and a preamp or DR 60d (under cam or on rig). Plus I’d like this rig to be able to mount on a tripod as well as go handheld. AND be quick to set up (a lot of my clients just get me for a half day).
some sort of run down would be great. Right now I have no cage and between My dr60d, camera, led light, videomic I have to sacrifice one or two of those items and it is tough to stay mobile. Cages are expensive! And I fear they will slow me down and not mount to tripods and monopods.

same here…the gear I carry with me has grown exponentially! Thanks in part to the deals I jumped on from here…..

Are you looking for a shoulder rig or just a cage and are you a one man band or do you usually have help? Most of the time when I go handheld, I have my camera, a wireless receiver, and a pair of headphones. A boom mic operator is running around catching sound and sending it back to the camera via a stereo transmitter and I have a few fixed light stands setup. I leave a set of rails and or a cage on the tripod with a few friction arms with lights and monitor already attached. Then simply slide the camera back onto the QR plate when I move back to the tripod.
Really kind of depends on what form factor you are looking for.

Well, myself, it’s a 1.5 man op. we use a handheld mic and a lav on the talent. i carry the cam and dr-60d. most on the time we use a tripod, but there are times when we can’t, like some convention floors where the booth’s are tiny and we can’t set up in the isle. SDCC being guilty of this!
being able to transition from handheld to either tripod or shoulder rig would be great.

I don’t do a lot of conventions but when I do, I stick mostly to a monopod. It gives you a stable support, doesn’t take up much space and can be collapsed under a rig small enough that you can still use it as a cage without removing it. The Sirui N1004 tripod/monopod combo works great for that. Combine that with a small set of rails and handles and you can move on a monopod just like you can with a shoulder rig only much more stable.

I have the Gearbox and it works great for both mounting accessories as well as pulling it off the tripod and going hand held:

So i was wondering was size monitor would be best for using a tripod setup with a cage? I have a rebel t4i, i plan on purchasing the alzo transformer rig, i have a mic( bronstein brn 20), getting a zoom H1, and getting a monitor. I was looking at mustHD brand. but i cant decide between 5.6 or 7 in. I feel 7 in would be too big but 5 would be too small. My galaxy s4 is 5 in and i just bought the dslrcontroller app. …sorry for no links i dont understand how to do them

I prefer a smaller monitor. I’ve used 7 and 8 inch monitors, they’re good in the studio, but they’re just too big for a shoulder rig in my opinion. Something in the 5 to 6 inch range so what I like to use.

just received my Neewer, the seller was not someone I would recommend, but this monitor is small, and feels cheap, and it actually came as Viltron not Neewer. for what it is for, it is worth the $122.

Has anyone tested/used the 5DmkII in recording-mode w. the Neewer DC-50 Field monitor?
How does the monitor handle the 480×640-VGA live view recording -mode signal: Can the monitor upscale the 480 vertical lines of 5DmkII live view recording-mode output to the full 480 vertical lines of the Neewer DC-50 (a vertical 1:1 supposedly with some resulting black space on both right and left side due to the 800 minus 640 pixel ‘surplus’ relative to the live view rercording-output in 480×640 (4:3) from from 5DmkII)?
And how good is the live view recording-mode image on theNeewer DC-50 then for focusing while recording then really?
Hope someone can pls. throw some light here 🙂

I thought I’d give the Viltrox DC-50 a try with my Ronin M gimbal, as the 5″ size is appealing. It worked for about 15 minutes and then started to flash on and off. I tested it with both of my cameras (GH4 and GH3), with same results. My MustHD monitor works fine with both cameras, so I guess I got a defective DC-50.
