The Palette interface is quite nice. I guess one could build something similar in function but not nearly as polished by using littleBits modules. These are electronic components that interconnect using magnets too.

The buttons and dimmers goes for 1/7 the price of Pallete Gear. The slider go for 1/5 the price. Of course you need the “base” kit which is $99.
Also, you will need to program it yourself. Since littleBits is aimed at 8+ years old it shouldn’t be that hard for an adult.
