The Canon 24-70mm L f2.8 lens has been a very popular zoom since it was released in 2002.  But over the last 10 years lens technology has advanced and the Canon 24-70 has stayed the same. Although Canon has finally released the 24-70mm mark II, it’s lack of IS and it’s$2300 price tag are pretty hard to swallow.

The Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC lenses fits right in that sweet spot by out performing the original Canon 24-70mm, but slightly under preforming compared to the mark II. At a list price of $1300 it’s still expensive, but it’s a $1000 less then you’ll spend on the 24-70mm mark II.

Right now Amazon has a few Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC lenses on sale (amazon warehouse deal) for $1,035 which is about $260 cheaper then the current retail price. I was able to spend a little bit of time using this lens when I filmed with Dave Dugdale and found it to be very enjoyable. I hadn’t planned on picking up the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 but at this price I went ahead and pulled the trigger. The 12 months same as cash deal Amazon has going right now also helped.

I’ll post more on the lens once it shows up. It’s a pretty good deal for the price and the image stabilization does come in handy (pun intended) for hand held shots.
