18Apr Canon 5d mark III firmware release date announced
Canon’s posted a little note on the 5d mark III page in the right hand column stating that the 5d mark III clean HDMI firmware update will be released April 30th. They’re really waiting until the last minute on their “sometime in April” deadline. I think I’ll be picking up a Atomos Ninja 2 sometime next week to take advantage of the new feature. Still not sure if you’ll be able to use the camera screen and the HDMI output at the same time. If that’s the case I might pick up a Blackmagic hyperdeck for second camera. I’ll keep you posted.

Saw many 5D3’s with new firmware at NAB. Yes, LCD works with HDMI output. Saw at Atomos booth first hand. 🙂

I played around with the 5d3 at the Atomos booth as well. The start/stop recording signal to the Ninja was a nice feature. Hopefully we’ll get the same features that the demo cameras had.

First Canon said that it was hardware limitation.. now with a firm upgrade it can be done… Does it mean that magic lantern guys would dismember the new firm and apply to other models?
Just dreaming…
Offtopic: I’ve been working today with the 1Dc and the image it’s not crispy, awesome, fantastic, etc as I espected. It comes with 24-70 2.8. Maybe it’s a wrong choice of lens for this camera? Was an overhead shot with a hand drawing something, lot of light (kinoflo) for small aperture.

I’ve heard rumors that canon might be encrypting this version of the firmware to prevent the magic lantern guys from decompiling it. As for the 1Dc, the most impressive part has always been the burst rate, image quality is about on par with the 5d mark III. I debated on buying a single 1Dc or two 5d mark III’s and after playing around with both of them the 5d mark III won out for my use.

Deejay,
To be honest I didn’t spend that much time at the Atomos booth, can you tell me if the ‘Blade’ will also work with the new 5D3 firmware, and if so are you considering that one as well?

The blade will work as well but it only has HD-SDI inputs so you’ll have to spend another $300 on their hdmi to HD-SDI converter. That raises the price to about $1500.

Ah, thanks DeeJay.
I pretty busy for the next two months but I plan to get a Ninja 2 in for review after that to see how it does with the new 5D3 firmware.

If you get to it before I do let me know how it works out. I should have a Ninja 2 in for testing next week and I’ll post some more info once I’ve tested that out. I’ll probably be spending this weekend testing the Tascam DR-60D and that Clone Sony monitor I have in. But I have two shoots scheduled next week and I don’t know if I’ll have time to get to the Firmware update and testing until the following weekend.

If you’re already registered (meaning if you’ve ever bought an Atomos product) they will give out the converter (either hdmi-sdi or sdi-hdmi) for free when buying the Blade, pretty decent. You can also record in-camera and the ninja without a drop in resolution (unlike the d800).
Lastly, I really liked the Blade, amazing resolution, waveform, etc..But unfortunately I can’t see myself spending $1,500 🙂

What I meant was that they will give the sdi-hdmi converter if you get the Blade, and the hdmi-sdi if you get the ninja2 (unless I’m mistaken)
