07Feb Tascam DR-60d $199 with a free copy of Pluraleyes 3
If you are in the market for a field recorder, B&H has the Tascam DR-60d field recorder on sale for just $199 and that includes a free copy of Pluraleyes 3. That’s a pretty darn good price for an excellent little field recorder. Pluraleyes also adds a lot of value and is an excellent way to automatically sync audio from external recorders.
For more info on the Tascam DR-60d field recorder check out this full video review above. You can also find my full audio samples here as well as an overview here.

I don’t even need this but am tempted since I have to upgrade my older version of Plural Eyes anyways. It would be like getting the recorder for $99.

Does Plural Eyes work with FCPx? How does it compare with the built in Multicam sync?

wow, I wish I can get $200 back from being the the few first to order this…

DeeJay,
Slightly off subject!
Sorry I am going to have to stop reading your Blogs and the reviews on your site!!
The reason. I Do Not Live in the US!
Sorry, I will have to calm down. I have for many months enjoyed your reviews and videos etc, greatly illuminating instructional, particularly when deliberating a purchase or two. My grumble is one you probably encountered already. The great prices you have available for associated kit in the US compared with the UK. The above is a prime example $199=tax in US, £299 inc in UK => $490! Its almost worth flying over for visit!
Anyhow all that aside, great review, as always those useful little insights to functional points to bear in mind when thinking through the pro/cons.
Many thanks.

John, you might be able to rope a friend or family member here in the states into buy a few of these US deals and dropship them to you as a gift. Shipping would only add $20 or so the price vs the crazy $490.
I have the same frustration when i’m in Europe and I can get a sim card and 1 month of unlimited data for £10 or £15, but I pay almost $100 a month here and I own my phone. I guess there are trade offs. 😉

AHHHHHHHHH! have to wait an hour to get paid…… was going to wait as $350 would have been tough/tight. at $200, it will be bought TODAY!
February 7th, 2014 at 1:44 pm
And it’s been ordered! Thanks Deejay!

No problem, that’s what i’m here for.

Also picked up a lowepro edit 110 on clearance @ a local walmart as the tascam dimensions seem a perfect fit.

mine arrived over the weekend!!! was a bit disappointed with the low volume into our cams (t4i, t5i, 5dmk3) but audio recorded on the dr-60d a great compared to to the canon cams direct.

If you aren’t happy with the camera output volume, you might want to give the line output a try. Since both the Camera out and Line out are adjustable you can reduce the hotter signal from the line out port using the potentiometer. When I use the DR-60D as an XLR adapter I usually send the line out (adjusted to the lower end of the scale) to the camera.

Kaiju,
How did that Lowepro case work out for you? Is there enough space for the cables (xlr inputs and headphone output) or did you get right angle connectors?

I just bought this same Tascam via Amazon, is Pluraleye in the box on a disk? If it is I need t send this one back and buy from B&H
February 18th, 2014 at 8:39 am
I don’t think it’s included in the Amazon offering, but you might e-mail tascam and see if it’s a B&H only special or a special that’s offered directly through tascam.

Thanks for the quick response, I will just buy it from B&H.

Purchased this after seeing your review and several others. I dig the interface and usability but it broke within our first week of ownership. I plugged in my Sennheiser G3 with their fairly high quality XLR cord and the cheap XLR inputs on the Tascam DR60D won’t let go of it. It is literally stuck. Short of yanking it out and breaking the unity, it won’t release. Worse yet is that I have contacted Tascam customer support and still have not heard from them (approaching a month at this point!). So, in the end, I would not recommend this project especially because of their unresponsive customer support.

I use mine on a daily bases with the G3 and a number of other XLR cables. Never had any problems and I’ve been using it for over a year. Are you sure you didn’t jam something in there with it?

Is it possible to arm one of the XLR inputs (for a Sennheiser wireless or Rode NTG-2) and arm one of the 3-4 inputs (for a Rode Video Mic Pro)? Or, will I have to record in 4 track, mono mode and toss out 2 unused tracks? Is there a way to adapt the 1/8″ Rode VMP plug to work with the XLR input on the DR-40? Will phantom power wreck that mic? Sorry for all the questions…

Dave,
You can not choose to record with one xlr input and the stereo 1/8″ input without putting the record mode in 4ch. If you were only recording mono you could choose either channel 3 or channel four.
You can get an 1/8″ TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter. Rode actually makes one that you can find here: http://tinyurl.com/mstav7t
Though you could probably find a cheaper alternative.
Sincerely,
Craig Armstrong

Dave,
Phantom power is something you choose to have on individually for channels 1 and 2. Channels 3/4 have plugin power.

Craig – Thanks for your replies.
Do you know if I can safely plug the Rode VMP into one of the two XLR inputs if I am using the other XLR input with phantom power for my Rode NTG-2? If not, I can use the NTG-2’s internal battery.
Recording in 4 channel mode is fine with me if I can avoid wasting memory card space by not recording empty tracks. I have a Tascam DR-680, which allows record enabling individual tracks in any combination. Its a good recorder, but the smaller size of the DR-60 will be more ergonomic in some situations.
April 9th, 2014 at 10:43 am
Yes, the xlr inputs are safe to use. There are switches on the face of the recorder for channels one and two. They can be set individually to either line, mic, or mic+phantom power.

Thanks Craig. I downloaded the DR-60 manual, but wasn’t sure if each channel could be armed individually.
Currently priced at $180 bundled with PluralEyes at B&H Photo is a pretty sweet deal.

It sure is a great deal. My favorite feature is being able to record dual mono or stereo. Which gives you a duplicate track recorded at a lower dB level. Which is doubly fantastic because digital limiters don’t really help a whole lot.
