29Mar Tascam DR-40 Firmware upgrade adds independent volume control
The Tascam DR-40 just got a little bit better. With the release of the new Tascam DR-40 1.10 firmware you now have the ability to independently control either audio input. This brings the DR-40 a little bit closer to the Zoom h4n. If you’re interested in upgrading the firmware on your DR-40 here’s the link to the firmware update.
If you don’t need all the extra features of the Zoom h4n, the Tascam DR-40 is a pretty good deal at about half the price. It might be time to put together a DR-40 v.s. Zoom h4n video.

I picked up the DR-40 not long ago, and so far it’s been a dream. I’ve been using Tascam products for years as a musician (drummer), and I was never much of a fan of Samson/Zoom products. The sound on the unit is amazing, and the features are fabulous for the price. The firmware update makes everything perfect.
I look forward to your video, I’m a fan.

I don’t have any external recorder, I just rented the H4n a couple of time and I’ve been looking to buy one. The DR-40 seams almost the same for my purpose. Interviews and some wireless lavalier.
I can understand that a Civic is cheaper than a BMW 😉 But for a 50% of the H4n, I don’t care if the big difference is on the body material (Aluminum vs Plastic)
I would love to know what you think DeeJay.

I’ll try to have a comparison video up in the next few weeks, but for the most part if you don’t need all the extra features or don’t want to pay for them, the Tascam DR-40 is a good basic field recorder for the price.

I was planning on getting a Zoom h4n (+Audio-Technica AT899) in a few days but now that i’ve seen this I’m curious. Is it really worth it? I have no experience using these.

The Zoom h4n is worth the extra money if you need the extra features. If you only need a simple field recorder with 2 xlr inputs and a built in mic then the Tascam DR-40 is a better value for the price. Working on a head to head video, probably have it out in the next few weeks if I can take a brake from testing the 5d mark III long enough.
