16Aug Rokinon 35mm f1.4 testing next week
I have a Rokinon 35mm f1.4 EF mount lens coming in for testing. I’m interested in your input on what tests you would like to see in the review video as well as the comparison tests with the Canon 35mm f1.4 lens. Here’s whats on the current list right now:
- Bokeh
- Vignetting
- Sharpness
- Build quality
- Lens Flare
The plan is to run all of these tests on a full frame body (Canon 5d mark III) as well as a crop sensor body (Canon 7d) to see how well the Rokinon 35mm performs. Then to compare those results to the Canon 35mm f1.4 lens. If there is something I’ve missed in the lineup or another interesting test you’d like to see me run, post it here in the comment section and I’ll see what I can do. Lets try and make the review process a little more interactive.

Sweet! Looking forward to seeing this lens in action. Will you be using the standard edition or that new fangled cinema edition?

It will be the standard addition. The glass is the same as the new version from what I understand. The only difference is the de-clicked Aperture ring, built in gear, and mounting options.

I would love to see focus pulls, to see how smooth it is. Also sharpness, saturation, contrast and detail are big ones. Maybe moving trees or some other detail shots.
According to http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/657-samyang35f14eosff?start=1 the lens is very sharp but I would love to see how it does in the real world… photos and videos 😉
Keep up the good work. You helped me a lot thus far 😉

Focus ring added to the list.

Color fringing, that tends to be a problem with these 3rd party lenses

Good point, I’ll add that one.

I’d be interested to see you adjust on the fly to see how quiet the aperture controls are. Also, edge and corner sharpness.

If possible, do a comparison or tell us how it compares with the Sigma 30mm 1.4 too, they are a close match too.

I’ll see if I have enough time to get that done.

Hey DeeJay!
I have this lens and can say that with my 7D it’s a fantastic lens!
Over here in the UK the lens is known as Samyang, not Rokinon, and to get a fluid aperature ring I had to ‘De-click’ mine and line it with a small amount of silicone grease, which certainly made it more fluid. This has the benefit of having a smooth change in the aperature while shooting, as opposed to it ‘jumping’ – you may want to include this option in your review.
Keeep up the great work buddy!

You can find it under 3 or 4 brands here, but other then some slight color changes they are all the same lens. I’ll look into the de-clicking options and see if I can add it to the review. Thanks for the heads up!

I’d like to see tests of the distortion. Compared to your other Canon lens of course. And how easily the distortion is to correct on both lenses.

Just ordered the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF.
Super excited, comes with the aperture ring “de-clicked” for smooth iris pulls, depth of field markings and on lens gears for follow focus.
