26Mar NastyClamp vs Actionpod which one is right for your kit?
I’ve been playing around with the NastyClamp as well as the Actionpod for a few weeks now trying to decide which one is a better fit. Both use the same 3/4 inch Loc-line tube so they both have pretty much the same load capacity. The major difference is in the squeeze clamp and mounting stud.
The NastyClamp uses a metal squeeze clamp as well as a 1/4 20 stud with thumb screw while the Actionpod uses a plastic clamp with a much shorter 1/4 20 stud. The NastyClamp feels more durable, while the Actionpod is lighter weight. I don’t think you’ll go wrong with either of these units, it really comes down to personal preference.
One pro tip is that you can find 6 inch lengths of the 3/4 inch Loc-line tube used for the flex portion of these clamps on ebay for around $6 with shipping. So if you need to increase the reach of these units, it’s only a matter of snapping them apart and adding a few more peaces. Also Dinkum sells the 1/4 20 stud separately so if you can find it with out a crazy shipping markup, you might even be able to build your own.
On a side note, the version of the ActionPod shown in this video is the smaller unit. The Actionpod Pro has a clamp that can open up to 2 inches. As of this writing it’s actually cheaper to buy the Actionpod Pro ($40.45 with free shipping) then it is to buy the Actionpod ($31 + $10 shipping). If you plan to buy a NastyClamp it looks like the lowest prices can be found on their website. If you are looking for cold shoe mounting options for either one of these clamps you might want to check out this earlier post on mounting.
