11Dec TP-LINK TL-MR3040 wireless field monitor with DSLR controller
Finally had a chance to sit down and hack the TP-Link TL-MR3040 Wireless unit. In case you missed it, with a little bit of work you can setup the TP-Link TL-MR3040 to work with the DSLR controller android app. This basically gives you a wireless control as well and monitoring capabilities for less than $40.
Note: Keep in mind that once you update the firmware on this router it will be dedicated to DSLR controller use. It is possible to return the router to it’s original state but from what I understand it can be tricky and it’s not something i’ve tried. If you use this daily for its original intended purpose, you may want to get a second unit for use with your camera only.
Before you get started with the hack, you’re going to want to remove the cover and find out what hardware version your device uses. Right under the bar code you’ll see “Ver.” followed by a number. If it says Ver 1.0 you’re going to want to download this firmware, if it says Ver. 2.0 you’re going to want to download this firmware. Make sure you check this first, if you try to update the device with the wrong firmware file you could end up bricking it.
Once you’ve downloaded the correct firmware, you’ll want to power on the TP-Link TL-MR3040 wireless router. When it’s up and running (indicated by the green light next to the wireless symbol) use your laptop or desktop to connect to it wirelessly. Once you’ve connected to it, open up a browser window and type in “192.168.0.1” at which point you should see the Authentication Required screen above. The Username is “admin” and the password is “admin”, once you’ve typed that in click “Log In” on the window.
UPDATE: Some people have reported issues updating via wifi. If that’s the case simply connect your computer to the router via the built in ethernet port. Wifi normally works, but a wired connect can eliminate possible problems.
When the router page loads you’ll need to find the “System Tools” link on the left hand side of the screen. Click on that, than click on the “firmware upgrades” in the drop down menu.
Click on “Choose File” and select the firmware for either Version 1 or Version 2 that you downloaded earlier. Once you’ve selected the file the new firmware will show up next to the Choose File button. Click upgrade and you’re good to go.
If everything works out correctly you should see Firmware Upgrade in your browser with a loading indicator bar. The firmware upload automatically and the router will reboot on its own.
Once the new firmware has been uploaded, use your tablet or phone to connect to DSLR controller network, your login password will be “dslrcontroller”. When your device is connected, you can use a usb cable to connect the TP-Link TL-MR3040 wireless router directly to your camera. After connecting your camera, power it on and place the camera in live view mode, then select the dslr controller app on your tablet or phone. If all goes well the app will fire up, see the wireless device and start working as though your tablet was connected directly to your camera.
Monitoring delay is less than a second, and the frame rate is high enough to be very usable on the Nexus 7 FHD. All the controls in the DSLR controller app work as well as they do with a wired connection. If you are in the market for a field monitor, but working on a tight budget, you might want to give this a try before you spend $200 or $300 on an HDMI monitor. For framing, camera control, and many other applications this is more than enough to get by. It also works much much better than the Canon 6d’s native wifi application. Canon could learn a lot from DSLR controller.
If you haven’t played around with this app, you might also want to check out this guide I put together demoing DSLR controller with a wired tablet. The app has come along way since then, I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it for non paying work or even paying work if you are confident enough with the app’s controls.
You might also want to swing over to DSLR controller’s site and find out more about the app and what devices are supported. The app is well worth the 8 or 9 dollars they charge for it, even if you only use it once. The $36 TP-Link TL-MR3040 wireless router is a little more than the special cable needed for a wired connection (about $27 more), but it works as good or better than some of the other Wireless controller devices I’ve tested.

any words on batterylife?
December 11th, 2013 at 1:29 pm
I’ve only used it about 2 hours so far. I’m guessing 3 or 4 max, you can get a few extra batteries for around $13 on amazon.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:54 pm
I just got mine and it works amazing! This is the best deal out their. I even use it with my Samsung galaxy 3. Great for doing videos when you have no one to work the camera.
December 11th, 2013 at 11:53 pm
As someone mentioned in your previous post about this device it does look extremely familiar to the Camranger unit, even use a TP-Link battery? My question is this device you have works with the Android App the Camranger works on the iPad? Does this unit work with an iPad or only the Android ap? I have a rooted Nook Color with the DSLR Android App installed on it would the Nook suffice as a good tablet say compared to the Nexus 7 if I am just going to use it as a video monitor?
December 12th, 2013 at 1:07 am
Thank you so much for this! Does the USB cable come with the TP-Link? If not would you please provide an Amazon link to the right cable when you get a chance? Just to make sure, you do not need internet on your cellphone or tablet right? The TP-Link creates it’s own wi-fi.
December 12th, 2013 at 10:33 pm
Any chance this will work with the Panasonic gh3?
December 13th, 2013 at 3:06 am
Without some programing i doute it.
December 14th, 2013 at 4:53 am
Hi Dj,
on the box of the tp-link,
there is written 3g/3.75g,
is it correct?
December 14th, 2013 at 5:43 pm
Hey,
Hope you’re enjoying freezing Scotland (clue: drink some Scotch).
Just wanted to thank you for your coverage of these units.
While it was a pain to discover that ML RAW doesn’t like DSLR Controller, I still have plenty of use for it.
So, cheers. Mine’s an Oban.
December 14th, 2013 at 8:56 pm
my question is, will this work with version 2.2 of the MR 3040. I just got mine and was wondering if others or yourself have the 2.2 version of the MR 3040 thanks.
December 15th, 2013 at 12:36 pm
I believe so. You just need to use the 2.x firmware when upgrading the router.
December 15th, 2013 at 4:24 pm
thank you, yes I can confirm that it does indeed work with the v2.2 with the v2.x bin file. it works great.
January 23rd, 2014 at 3:57 am
Can somebody tell me where i can find 2.x version of this software???
March 12th, 2014 at 3:57 pm
I finally got the firmware of the MR3040 v2.2 changed to Openwrt. The TP-link works in the WISP mode when connected via a USB cable to my Samsung SIII
But in the ACESS POINT mode there is Wifi, my Android tablet sees it, but it refuses to to connect to the TP-Link connected to my Nikon D3s.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:48 am
Here’s my wireless setup, a 5D with my Galaxy S4 attached with duck tape in airplane mode and controlling it with a galaxy tab 7 (the original).
I’m going to buy the TP-Link. It’s better than put my S4 4 meters over the floor, hehe.
It’s amazing for this type of shots.

December 15th, 2013 at 1:22 pm
would this work with a hacked touchpad running android?
December 15th, 2013 at 9:08 pm
It will work tranfer the JPG / RAW photo to computer? Or only just work with the Android?
December 16th, 2013 at 6:14 pm
I believe you can transfer images to your Android tablet, I don’t think DSLR controller works with windows.
December 18th, 2013 at 8:09 am
Hi there, because of this article, I went and got myself the tp link and got the firmware installed, however I did experience an issue that I can’t install into my 4.2.2. android tablet, but it does work on the 4.0 and 4.1 android versions, and I’m using those cheap $60 9″ tablets and have no problem… just unfortunately doesn’t work right now on the 4.2.2 android firmware in my case… anyone got it working with 4.2.2?
December 18th, 2013 at 8:33 am
I’ve seen a few reports that if you change the tablets pixel density setting it will cause problems with dslr controller in 4.2.2, don’t know if that’s your problem but it’s something to look into.
December 20th, 2013 at 5:25 am
Hi Deejay, i doesn’t even get installed on 4.2.2. It just say couldn’t install to USB storage or sd card. I googled everywhere and tried everything and then decided to use 4.0 and 4.1 tablets. Those got installed without problem and tested well. But just doesn’t want to be installed on 4.2.2.
Dslr controller people alms their website do not have enough information, their lack of support is sad.
December 20th, 2013 at 9:29 am
I’ll see if I can find a 4.2.2 device to test it out on. I think the problem is less about lack of support and more about the number of different devices and versions floating around. With iphone apps you only have to support 4 or 5 devices with 4 or 5 versions of iOS total which are all more or less compatible, with android you have hundreds of different devices and modified versions of the android OS laying around. On top of that there are still around 25% of the devices running Gingerbread which doesn’t support host usb functionality. I would not want to be an android developer with that many variations out there.
January 27th, 2014 at 6:32 pm
please provide a link to the tablets that you bought =D
December 19th, 2013 at 4:44 pm
Does anybody know the max range of this?
December 19th, 2013 at 5:05 pm
I’ve only tested it at 20 feet or so line of site. So it works at least that far, but it’s a pretty low power transmitter since it only has battery power to work with. I would guess you’d max out at maybe 50 feet line of site. It’s pretty cold out right now so I haven’t had a chance to test it.
December 20th, 2013 at 11:19 am
Hey Deejay,
This is some great info. Purchased it via your link and works instantly great once the firmware is flashed.
I have to also apologize for all the trolling crap I’ve given you over the past couple years.
Your post/video on the iRig Pre is a STAPLE in my kit as well as very promoted on the Frugal Filmmaker group on FB.
The TP Link router is an epic find and will help directors and their camera OPs not crowd around the camera.
Also the amount of posting of deals has been very welcomed.
December 20th, 2013 at 11:35 am
No apologies needed, if trolling was that bad it would have been deleted. 😉 I’m glad all my research and testing helps people out.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:05 am
We need a quick how to hack for a hot-shoe mount! Happy new year Deejay!
January 14th, 2014 at 4:52 am
Easy, a cheap plastic replacement shoe mount from ebay and a velcro strap to hold the router and extra cable.
January 14th, 2014 at 8:14 am
A little velcro goes a long way. 😉
January 1st, 2014 at 11:44 am
DJ – Just got the TP link in but I cannot connect to it on my computer.
The Wireless password under “Physical Description is TL-MR3040 but that password does not work so I cannot connect to it.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong … I have tried all three settings on the side of the router … which mode should I use?
Thank you for your time and this great tip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 12th, 2014 at 4:06 pm
The user name in the TP-link device , out of the box, is admin for user name and admin for password.
January 10th, 2014 at 4:22 pm
Hi
Do you know how to upgrade with the latest firmware 2013.12.20

Hello Deejay,
Cool stuff. Was wondering what the lag was like. You mention the frame rate is really slow, but I think I notice it also doesn’t show immediate movement. I was thinking of using it if there is no lag, say on a jib for panning or action filming. I think the lag would make that difficult.
Thanks,
Huy
January 10th, 2014 at 11:11 pm
The lag is around a frame or two. Not enough to cause problems on a jib, though for a jib you could simply use a 20 or 30 foot usb cable.
January 10th, 2014 at 11:20 pm
Thank you very much, Deejay.
January 10th, 2014 at 11:41 pm
Has anyone tried Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 with this app?
The website says
Compatibility unknown – please report back if you use this model.
January 11th, 2014 at 8:59 am
DSLR controller via wifi can work with a lot more devices. The compatibility list is for direct wired devices, not wireless.
January 12th, 2014 at 4:07 am
That is a good point about the list being for wired devices.
I purchased the app and did a hard wire test with a Canon 60D and an old Acer iconia a500. It works great, so I ordered the TP-Link so I can try the wireless too.
The app is very good and gave me all the control I need when shooting video.
Great investment, and well worth it.
January 12th, 2014 at 8:37 am
My old Droid 4 phone isn’t on the supported list, but it works via wifi. It’s a bit more laggy but I’m guessing thats because my phone only has wireless G not N. Still the wired connection doesn’t work but the wireless connection does.
January 13th, 2014 at 9:47 pm
@ john ~ Yes it works with the Samsung Tab 3. I have this set up and it works great.
January 12th, 2014 at 2:17 pm
TP link shows up named DSLRController and when the table tries to connect am getting a request for security password. The password on the TPLink does not work.
What is the new security password for the new firmware hack?
January 12th, 2014 at 7:31 pm
“your login password will be “dslrcontroller”” as listed in the above guide.
January 12th, 2014 at 9:50 pm
Any word on compatibility for iPads/iOS? Thanks
January 13th, 2014 at 5:24 am
No iOS support.
January 13th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
work with 5d mkII??
January 13th, 2014 at 4:44 pm
Yes.
January 14th, 2014 at 3:15 am
Any soluti on for the iPad ?
January 14th, 2014 at 8:13 am
The $300 camranger.
January 14th, 2014 at 6:38 am
Can this be used to shoot tethered (ideally running something other than DSLR Controller on a laptop)? Thanks for your write-up 🙂
January 14th, 2014 at 8:37 am
I believe you can get it to work with EOS utility on a laptop, though I haven’t had a chance to try it.
January 14th, 2014 at 8:45 am
Thanks. That occurred to me after I posted – I’ll try it tonight 🙂
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:05 pm
Have you had any luck with this? I have it working fine with my Galaxy S4, but no dice when connecting to the WiFi network with a MacBook Air and EOS Utility.
January 23rd, 2014 at 1:55 am
No. The router didn’t recognise the 5D2 (when viewed using the web interface to the router) so I’ve given up for the moment.
January 14th, 2014 at 8:06 am
Hey Deejay,
Thanks for sharing this awesome DIY project.
I was wondering if wireless USB adapter dongles can be used instead of the wireless router. It would make a much slicker design.
Also is there a free DSLR controller app for iOS devices that you would recommend?
Thanks
January 14th, 2014 at 8:20 am
No dslr controller app for iOS. As for the USB adapter dongles, you can follow this guide for a wired connection. Hope that helps.
January 14th, 2014 at 9:09 am
Does this work with Nikon cameras? I have a D600 and it would be fantastic to have this ability.
January 14th, 2014 at 9:40 am
Apparently some have gotten it to work with Nikon cameras using DSLR Dashboard. You can find the code here: https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/downloads/list
Looks like you have to sideload the app, and there are multiple firmware versions labeled with “nikon”. Might be able to play around with it and get things to work.
January 14th, 2014 at 9:52 am
Thanks. Cheap enough hack to have a go. I’ll report back, when I receive the router, on any success I have.
January 14th, 2014 at 11:06 am
DSLR Dashboard works great with the TP-Link router on Nikon and Canon DSLRs. I installed open source firmware on the router and it’s working great with my Nikon D800. Here’s a video link showing step-by-step how to install router firmware: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Our-AxmrDJM
January 18th, 2014 at 4:35 am
BJ Nichols,
Could you explain how to set it up. In the video just is shown with a Canon. I have tried with different Nikon (D300, D610 and D800) and it is not possible to connect them through the TP-LINK (version 2). The firmware has been installed according to video but there is no connection.
Connect to OPenWrt/linux? I guess yes, then enter server IP address, the default is 192.168.1.1. Is I keep that it says: unable to connect (IO exception) host 192.168.1.1, if I place the same address of the server (above) 192.168.1.49 (in my case, and port 4757) then it says No DSLR found on openwrt server.
Any help welcome
January 22nd, 2014 at 9:41 am
Hi User1,
I had the same problem with my D300 and D800E but now I solved it.
You need to go to this link that Deejay gives a few post below:
https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/downloads/list
Then download:
openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3040-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
AND
DslrDashboard_V0.30.30_x86.apk
You will use the first file to upgrade the firmware in the router, it only takes a few minutes and you can do it wireless (I am using a Mac, I do not know if this applies to Windows).
Sideload the apk file and restart the Android device.
Launch DslrDashboard, connect and enjoy.
All the process takes less than 5 minutes.
Regards.
January 25th, 2014 at 6:25 am
Thanks. Hope this will solve my problems as well.
January 15th, 2014 at 8:00 am
Great tutorial! Should it work with a Canon T3, 1100D ?
January 15th, 2014 at 8:02 am
If eos utility works with your camera, the TP-link should also work.
January 15th, 2014 at 3:29 pm
Doesn’t seem to work. My laptop is connected wireless to the 3040 (now flashed with the DSLRcontroller bin file), and the 3040 is connected to my Canon 5D2 using a USB/ mini-USB cable, but the 3040 doesn’t show the 5D2 as an attached device in the web interface for the 3040.
January 15th, 2014 at 3:36 pm
Hmm, i’ll play around with it tonight and see what I can figure out. Might need to configure the WFT menu to get it working.
January 15th, 2014 at 3:44 pm
Thanks 🙂
I don’t get the WFT Settings menu options on the 5D2 when it’s connected to the 3040 using a usb to mini-usb cable.
January 15th, 2014 at 4:30 pm
The WFT settings are for the canon eos utility to find your wifi and connect to it as though the camera was connected via usb. If I figure something out, i’ll put up a post with directions. I could see macro and photo booth guys wanting that feature and it would be a heck of alot cheaper than Canon’s wifi unit.
January 15th, 2014 at 10:01 am
Is there any possibility to get a firmware for the new TP-link wireless portable TP-link M5350.
Thanks
January 15th, 2014 at 11:05 am
Not currently.
January 15th, 2014 at 12:10 pm
Has anyone else had trouble getting the firmware onto the device? When I select the file that I downloaded, I get an error “Failed to open selected file.”
Everything else went as smooth as silk, but I can’t get the firmware updated.
Any ideas?
Trying to update firmware from my Nexus 7 as my desktop does not have a WiFi antenna.
January 15th, 2014 at 1:40 pm
Could be tricky trying to update the unit from your tablet. The web interface might not work correctly. Maybe head to a friends house and update it there?
January 15th, 2014 at 1:44 pm
So you think that using a laptop might solve the problem? Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try and report back.
January 16th, 2014 at 1:40 am
Just want to know more…
After flashing the MR3040
1. Does it mean it is dedicated only for this particular purpose? (i.e. no longer function as ordinary router)
2. Will there be any effect on switching the mode selector on the side?
3. Is there any setting required to make it work?
4. Is it possible to flash back the original TP-Link firmware to return to the original state?
January 17th, 2014 at 7:42 pm
According to the DSLR Controller website, you MAY be able to use it for its normal purpose after firmware update, but they advise you to assume that it will only work for wireless monitor.
January 17th, 2014 at 8:03 am
I have got a new TP-link MR3040 from Amazon and the version is 2.2. Anybody has tried onto this version?. Thanks in advance.
PS. Amazon.es has informed me that all new stock is v2.2.
January 17th, 2014 at 8:22 am
Simply use the version 2 firmware.
January 17th, 2014 at 9:08 am
Thanks
January 17th, 2014 at 10:26 am
The one I recieved from Amazon this week is v2.2 as well. I am going to test it out today and see if it will work as expected.
January 17th, 2014 at 11:10 am
works perfectly on a Samsung Galaxy note 8, Galaxy S4 and Nikon D800E.
Great and thanks.
January 17th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
EDIT: not working after reboot of the TP-link, no communicate with OpenWrt, it says unable to connect (IO exception) host 192.168.1.1, that is the address of the TP-LINK. Any guess on what is happening.
Thanks anyway
January 17th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
Sorry Pedro, I don’t own any Nikon gear for testing.
January 21st, 2014 at 6:36 am
To me that looks more like a problem with the web-interface then a problem with the camera.
January 17th, 2014 at 1:11 pm
Works with Canon T3…???
January 17th, 2014 at 1:44 pm
Yes.
January 17th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
Could anybody give a simple manual on how to connect it. I have updated the firmware, I can open the webpage of the tp-link on 192.168.1.1. But now when I open the app in my android tablet, what I have to do, I assume the TP-link should be in WISP mode?
Now in the tablet, start server yes or no?
Connect to OPenWrt/linux? I guess yes, then enter server IP address, the default is 192.168.1.1. Is I keep that it says: unable to connect (IO exception) host 192.168.1.1, if I place the same address of the server (above) 192.168.1.49 (in my case, and port 4757) then it says No DSLR found on openwrt server.
Any help welcome.
By the way my camera is Nikon D300s, D610 and D800.
Thanks
January 17th, 2014 at 2:29 pm
Sorry, I don’t own any Nikon gear.
January 17th, 2014 at 6:24 pm
Hello
i upgrade firmware v1 and i password don´t work.
any help
January 18th, 2014 at 2:30 pm
Hi,
Will it work with the Galaxy S3 phone?
Thanks
January 18th, 2014 at 3:27 pm
If the play store will let you install it you should be good to go for the wifi option.
January 19th, 2014 at 3:26 pm
Hi Deejay,
Thanks for the response.
I have the a problem.
Every time I try to connect the answer is the same:
Unable to connect (IO exception)
Host: 192.168.1.1
I have the Network Server Port set at 4757.
Any idea what can I do?
I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a Galaxy S4 with the same results and going crazy.
Thanks
January 19th, 2014 at 12:31 pm
Worked great!!! Unbelievably easy to install and implement.
Quick question (this idea came to me after I installed the new firmware) – would this (or any) battery powered router allow wireless tethering for something like Canon’s Digital Photo Professional? I’ve tethered very easily to that software using just a USB cable, but I’m wondering if a wireless router would accomplish the same thing? A wireless router without any firmware upgrade, just straight out of the box.
Thanks!!
January 19th, 2014 at 12:43 pm
Some people have reported it working via the WFT interface in eos utility, I haven’t been able to get it working.
January 20th, 2014 at 5:10 am
May it works with the Sony NEX-VG900?
January 20th, 2014 at 9:17 am
Sorry no.
January 21st, 2014 at 10:12 am
Can this work on the iPad? Maybe by using CamRanger’s iPad app? Do you know if this is using the CamRanger’s custom firmware which would probably indicate that the iPad app would work.
January 21st, 2014 at 8:53 pm
How to connect with 5D? video out?
January 22nd, 2014 at 2:21 am
What about a free software for Android? I would not mind the 8-9$ cost. But i feel more comfortable with something that i download and know it will always work and not something i install from the internet (every time) and might not be there in the future.
January 22nd, 2014 at 7:06 am
DSLRdashboard is the free app, you can find it in the app store. Still from what i’ve seen, i’d say its worth it to spend the $9 on DSLR controller.
January 24th, 2014 at 7:02 am
Will it work with Nikon D7100?
January 30th, 2014 at 8:09 am
BJ Nichols says it works but he does not have a Nikon to show how to do it. So far there is no Nikon owner giving conditions or proof of success connection to the camera.

I can confirm this works very well on my Canon T1i. Battery life seems to be 2 to 3 hours. I would suggest using a long cord to attach it to the camera. The one that came with my T1i was too short. The CamRanger is a rebranded TP-Link TL-MR-3040. http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2013/12/13/camranger-tp-link-tl-mr304/
My feeling is there will be a IOS app that can use the TP-Link soon.
Make sure you use the Market app and not a Pirated one. The password is dslrcontroller. All lower case. Make sure you place it in 3G/4G mode. It may not connect otherwise.
If you connect to the network but the app can’t see the camera there is something wrong with the app. Make sure your camera is in ‘Live mode’ A few small observations. I couldn’t connect to the TP-Link to flash it with Windows 8. I used a second machine with OS X. Windows XP or 7 should be fine. Make sure to flash the correct firmware for your router. Most seem to be Ver 2 but check first. This all worked well on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with CM 11 running Kitkat.

Dear Deejay,
I left this question on the YouTube channel after the video. I’m hoping you can be so kind again to answer for me. I think you’re just awesome and will promote all I can to send subscribers to your channel as I cannot thank you enough. Here’s the question I posted:
I have a question for your awesome self! I’m starting out with mini components until I can upgrade each component with professional parts. I have good mics, etc, but am still running the audio into the iPhone to record the video till I can buy a DSLR, and I use the charging port with an adapter to HDMI (or if a smartphone, depending on the technology of the charging port, I have a MHL or Slimport technology Micro usb to HDMI that plugs into a 5″ field monitor ($200). Can I somehow have my iPhone/LG G2 and plug the TP-Link into it somehow and then mirror my iPhone/android smartphone onto a tablet??
This is a much better, cheaper and more functional result. I would just have to find some kind of compatible adapter for the TP-link to plug into the charging port for the iPhone and a different adapter for the smartphone micro usb charging port-either slimport or MHL technology so that the TP-link can be connected to the phones and I can use the camcorder app to mirror to a tablet wirelessly. I know this a bit of an odd question since most have a DSLR and are not still using their phone’s camera app-but it has HD video and works for me until I can up grade.
Thank you in advance and I will and will continue to recommend your channel and on my new YouTube channel once up and running in a few weeks. I cannot that you enough!
Gigi : ).

This really wasn’t designed to work with an iphone. You may be able to use airplay and reflector to get your phones screen to show up on your computer monitor if that helps.

the image has a delay? how long? even if I find 3 feet of tp link?
thanks

I bought this router specifically to use with the DSLR Controller app and my 2 Canon cameras (7D and 60D). I found this through a Photographer blog regarding controlling a camera using wireless technology. Here is a link to the complete article: […] The product shipped fast and was packaged really well. Following the instructions on the link, I found the firmware version to be V2.2 and downloaded the appropriate update to make this work with the app. The install was very easy and I attached the router to a camera and following the instructions I had my Galaxy Tab 3 connected perfectly! Then I tried to connect my Galaxy S3 phone. I was able to see the dslrcontroller in the wifi discovery mode, but every time I would try to connect, it would say “no internet access” and disconnect immediately. If anyone knows how to fix this or get around it, please help me! 🙂 This is NOT a problem with the router, but seems to be a problem with my phone. Just to specify, my Galaxy Tab 3 is connected on the Sprint network and so is my phone. The tablet works, the phone does not. Please help! 🙂

I get the same thing with my S4 … I changed it to use a static IP and that gets it to connect, but in under 10 seconds it turns it off due to “slow internet speed” and it switches back to my home wifi. Must be a Samsung thing… I’ll look around and see if I can find a solution.

Hey
just downloaded DslrDashboard_V0.30.30.apk
and
BlueStack App Player http://www.bluestacks.com/
Now the Setup works with Windows (i have used win 8.1 pro x64) and the modified TP-Link Router
so you can use it also with your notebook or tablet
February 6th, 2014 at 1:45 pm
Sandro could you please return and say how you were able to make this work. I am using Windows 8 but I can use OS X. I downloaded bluestacks and dslrdashboard. Of course I have a TP-Link with the firmware working and it works with dslr controller wireless and wired. I am using a IBM T61 with 4gb RAM. By the way are you the Sandro my way in Chi-town?
Thanks, Tony
February 7th, 2014 at 4:32 am
hey tony
first of all,
my TP-Link Router has the DSLR Dashboard Firmware, not the DSLRController firmware
infos for DSLR Dashboard and downloads: https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/
there i downloaded “openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3040-v2-squashfs-factory.bin” Firmware
on the left site at the download section you can find the firmware 😉
then i installed bluestacks at my notebook,
then i downloaded the APK File from the DSLR Dashboard site
“DslrDashboard_V0.30.30.apk” (also to find at the download section on the left site of DSLRDashboard page.
then i opened the APK File with BlueStacks and started it
notebook is in the wifi of the TP-Link Router
and connected the app to the tp-Link server
and it worked
by the way
the DSLRDashboard App is for free (you can donate if you are happy with the solution and want to support the developers)

Thanks. I have the dslr controller firmware on my TP-Link. I gather this set up won’t work for me. Again thanks for the help.

Hey there. I saw this article initially and was totally excited about the potential. Certainly did not want to pay for the CamRanger and I wanted the versatility of moving between my different Android phones as well. Scrambled to get a router off of Amazon and when I got it, cracked it open and got to work. Tried some of the initial things that were suggested for the Nikon setup (through the different forums I’ve read) and none of them worked. Here is my setup that I can tell you worked like a charm.
Camera: Nikon D7000 (stock)
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S4 (Tmobile variant, stock/unrooted)
Router: TP-Link TL-MR3040 ver 1
TP-Link TL-MR3040 ver 1 Firmware:
https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/downloads/detail?name=openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3040-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin&can=2&q=
DSLR Dashboard APK (need to sideload; don’t use x86 version on the parent page):
https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/downloads/detail?name=DslrDashboard_V0.30.30.apk&can=2&q=
OpenCV Manager (need to sideload and turn off auto-update for Google Play):
https://code.google.com/p/dslrdashboard/downloads/detail?name=OpenCV_2.4.6_Manager_2.9_armv7a-neon.apk
Hopefully this will give some better insight into the setup for other Nikonians out there wanting to give this a try. I have no other Android setups to test this for compatibility.
Perhaps someone can put together a tutorial on how to get this to work with my Nikon Cameral Control Pro 2? I’d love to use this with my Windows 8 Pro tablet.
Take care and hope my setup works for you guys.
February 6th, 2014 at 4:39 pm
Thanks for the info NikonMike. I’ve gotten a lot of questions about using this with Nikon cameras but I only own Canon gear so I haven’t been able to give it a try.
February 7th, 2014 at 6:47 am

February 8th, 2014 at 4:35 am
Could it be used with the BMPCC?

February 15th, 2014 at 11:26 am
Work like a charm with 5DmII and a tp link 3040 ver 2.2 out of box by using firmware ver 2.
Install in 5 minutes maxi (using full wifi procedure).
Thank for this very clear how-to !
February 19th, 2014 at 6:44 pm
Got the TP-Link router, installed the firmware upgrade 2.x (although the router came with ver 2.2). Installed the App on my Nexus 5 and everything works like a charm. Super DYI tutorial and instructions that saves lots of $$$.
February 23rd, 2014 at 7:48 pm
Using a t2i and I’m having an issue that I wonder if anyone else has run into/knows how to fix.
I hook the tp-link to the camera, turn the camera on, and it “freezes”. Meaning it won’t let me use any buttons. It tells me to hit the live button, but none of the buttons respond. I unplug it, everything functions fine.
Am I missing a step?
Thanks in advance.
March 13th, 2014 at 10:31 pm
Hi Deejay,
First thanks for this tutorial. I got mine perfectly working following your instructions. Now, I have question… Can I use multiple DSLR Controller in Multiple DSLR Cameras? Meaning if I have 3 dslr cameras, then I have 3 TP Link(DSLR Controller) simultaneously working….but the name of the Wireless was the same like “DSLR Controller” on the WIFI. Now my question is…..Can We rename the DSLR Controller like…. DSLR Controller 1, then DSLR Controller 2, then DSLR Controller 3? Is this possible? Or is there any quick solution? Thanks Deejay. Hope to hear from you soon.
Emil
March 13th, 2014 at 10:41 pm
You could, but you’ll need a tablet and a TP-link for each camera, you also might run into some frame rate issues since there’s only so much bandwidth to go around.
March 16th, 2014 at 10:07 am
Thanks Deejay. I will try first to buy my second TP Link. The reason I ask this question because I tried wirelessly in my event last March 12 in the JS Prom. The Setup I did was… my TP Link is connected to my DSLR at the top using JIB Crane 14FT..then I connect it wireless in my Galaxy Note 2 then from a distance on the side I connect the Galaxy Note 2 into a Projector using HDMI cable and MHL cable for Note 2. Boom it works but with a delay on frame rate of course but at least I did live streaming while recording on my DSLR. It was great experience.
April 7th, 2014 at 1:21 am
Deejay,
How can we do live streaming using the DSLR Controller? Have you tried anything? Thanks Man.

I have my TP-link setup correctly. If i choose Live View on my Nikon D800 and connect my camera to the TP-Link, Live View stops and i can’t make it to start again.
If i disconnect the USB cable, Live View works again. So, can’t use Live View while connected tot the TP-Link using USB.
Any suggestions to solve this problem
June 18th, 2014 at 2:11 pm

April 25th, 2014 at 4:05 am
Hey, for a shoot with two cams, could I possibly monitor my two canon 60D cams this way or would I have to get two separate setups including another tablet?
April 25th, 2014 at 8:43 am
I don’t think there is currently any way to monitor two cameras from a single tablet.
May 9th, 2014 at 9:17 am
Hello,
I get a 18005 error when trying to upgrade the firmware :
“Error code: 18005
Upgrade unsuccessfully because the version of the upgraded file was incorrect. Please check the file name”
The hardware and firmware version are matching just as you described in the article.
Here is the info I’ve got when connecting to the device :
Firmware Version:
3.12.11 Build 120328 Rel.63398n
Hardware Version:
MR3040 v1 00000000
Any idea what’s wrong and what could be done so I can turn this into a wireless control ?
Thanks
May 9th, 2014 at 11:31 am
I’ve just found out that the device actually is a TL-MR11U which apparently is a chinese MR3040 (The firmware has already been modified since it now shows as MR3040).
May 11th, 2014 at 9:37 pm
I purchased the TP Link TL-MR3040 v 2.2 from my local electronic store on 05/08/2014. Installed the updated firmware and connected to my Canon EOS 40d with no problem. But when I tried to connect with my hack Nook Tablet, it did not find the WIFI connect nor my camera. The Nook Tablet connected to the DSLR Controller as WIFI, but could not connect with the camera. I turned the camera off and back on again. Can someone please help? Also, when I connected the router with my Pantech Phone it worked great even with a message about very low per-app memory, it still work with my cheap Android phone.
May 20th, 2014 at 4:27 am
Got to be the best thing since sliced bread!
Better than a 15 mtr.USB cable trailing across the yard.
Thanks for all the info. on this device, followed simple instructions…works great and without burning a hole in the wallet.

DeeJay,
I have 2 problems that is driving me crazy with dslrcontroller.
1- how can I stop the app from automatically downloading the taken photo to the tablet?
2- how can I get my tablet to remember the dslrcontroller password (for when the network is established in the control panel)? I use a Samsung Galaxy 3 tablet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
I have discovered dslr controller 10 days ago and still does not manage to use it wireless with a 5d mark iii.
My equipment:
– pad asus tf700t
– canon 5d mark iii
– canon 450d
– TP Link MR3040 v2
I tried the different configurations:
1/ 450d + usb cable to tf700t: working like a charm
2/ 450d + mr3040 + asus tf700t: working like a charm
3/ 5d mark iii + usb cable to tf700t: working like a charm
4/ 5d mark iii + mr3040 + asus tf700t: fail
and guess what config i’d like to use most
the steps i folloz for the wireless connection are (1) to start the mr3040; (2) to connect the tf700 to the server; (3) to connect the mr3040 to the camera and to switch the camera on; (4) to wait until i have 3 leds on on the mr3040 and finally (5) to launch the app.
this works perfectly with the 450d, but with the 5d i never manage to get to point 4, i have never more than 2 leds on…
I know that there are specific setting to follow as indidated on deslr controller website, either if i follow them or not the result is the same…
Anyone who has been into the same issues and managed to solve them? I did some googling but did not find any solution that was good for me…
apologies if there is a thread related to this on the forum already, in that case i did not manage to find it.
and hope i am posting at the right place, first time on xda developers!
thanks a lot!
NB: i have posted also this message on the xda developer related thread, if i get a solution from there i’ll let you know
August 19th, 2015 at 7:02 am
it’s probably your asus tablet that isn’t compatible with the app. try one of the other tablets recommended on their site: http://dslrcontroller.com/devices.php

I have downloaded firmware but my windows 7 laptop cannot open it any ideas
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:46 am
Howdi, I got Tp Link m3040 and ipad working fine with my nikon d3200 using dslr dashboard and the firmware for the tplink.
Just thought i want it for the pc aswell. i have downloaded dslr dashboard for pc.
Clicked the wifi connect button on screen but nothing. tried putting what i thought was the right address 192.168.0.1 but are unsure how to set it up. Presumably i would have to change my pcs router setting. iv4 settings…who knows??
April 27th, 2015 at 1:46 am
How did you get it working on an iPad? What app are you using?
January 14th, 2015 at 8:01 pm
Hi,
did anyone looked into using a mobile phone instead of TP-Link? I have a couple of spare HTCs from upgrades – wondered if there would be a way to hook one of them to the camera, run the app, create a wifi spot and connect from another phone?
January 14th, 2015 at 8:18 pm
I believe some people have got wifi tether working with two phones. The phone attached to the camera has to have OTG support.
January 14th, 2015 at 8:32 pm
any idea of some guide / manual out there?
January 17th, 2015 at 10:04 am
Holy Wow! I love it! I have this on a hit shoe with a .3 m cable and a nexus 7 2012 all on a DJI Ronin. It works great! I tried my friends nexus 9 and the more ram and better processing reduces the lag a lot. But wow what a great cable free viewing solution to do work with. thanks for such a great post.
February 27th, 2015 at 6:53 am
Just got the TP-link m3040 and then the V2 firmware and installed the firmware change. Went perfect. Works great. Just wanted to let folks know that the TP-link 3040 is now up the V2.3 and the 2.0 firmware hack worked fine. I was a little worried though I knew the 2.2 version of TP-link would update fine. But it went great.
May 9th, 2015 at 5:40 am
Great solution. I have few questions?
due to the size of this Router, I was looking for similar products but compact. would you recommend any smaller TP-Link? there are loads available on Amazon such as
http://www.amazon.co.uk/GaBing-HUAWEI-Portable-Wirless-Security/dp/B00QGD0ZZA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431171488&sr=8-1&keywords=wirless+portable+router
and
EBAY
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-802-11n-g-b-Mini-USB-Wireless-Router-Dongle-Internet-Adapter-WI-FI-SY-/361075925953?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5411cd63c1
do you think any other TP-Link can be modified? what are the modifications required to tweak any other (but smaller) TP-link?
many thanks

Have you manger to get it to send to a ftp via the Internet collection. Have the canon transmitter for my 1dx to send to the office but need to be able to use the 5d3 as well. The 5d3 one is a stupid price.

Brilliant information. Will check if it is valid or not since been more than a year of posting. So if I go out to buy the router now, any updated versions available? What about TP Link’s MR3020 (or any portable routers)? will they work?

I installed the software but only get black screen in qdslr with icons at the top and none on the sides.
What may be the problem?
Should I reinstall?
December 6th, 2015 at 8:50 pm
Thanks for the info here. I was able to successfully modified two unit. One for DSLR-Controller and one for DSLR-Dashboard. With DSLR Dashboard I can use it on my IPAD.
Now I would love to know if there is a solution out there for a motorized tripod head control via an app.
Something like this.
