10Mar Quick look at my EOS-M film kit
Here’s a quick look at the basic kit I’ve been using with the Canon EOS-M body. This bag has been lent out on 5 different shoots so far and everyone that’s used it seems to be pretty happy with the results. This is just a quick overview, I should have a deeper look at the EOS-M kit coming up towards the middle of the week.
Here’s the list of everything currently in the EOS-M kit.
- Canon EOS-M body
- Canon STM 22mm f2 lens
- Canon STM 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
- Fotodiox EOS-M to EF adapter
- Sigma 30mm f1.4
- Canon 85mm f1.8
- Canon FD 55mm f1.2
- Canon FD 35-105mm f3.5
- RODE Videomic Pro
- Wasabi LP-E12 battery set
The 30mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8 aren’t must haves for the kit, but I like to have a mix of primes and zooms in a kit to cover various requirements. It might be worth it to trade one or both of them out for a wider angle of view lens like theĀ Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. It just depends on whether you find wide angle or shallow depth of field more import for your work.

I really like my EOSM a lot, however it’s really not great indoors/low-light. I find if you hit ISO 800 or more it starts to get muddy.
Another great very inexpensive lens to try on the EOSM is the Samyang/Rokinon 14/2.8 (using the EF to EFM adapter of course). Even though it’s cropped on this body, it’s still wider than the 18-55 and a little faster to help with the weak ISO. Plus that 14 is pretty great on full frame too!

I’ve tested it against the t2i and found the image quality to be usable up to 1600 iso. Both the t2i and EOS-M images looked pretty much the same to my eye. I’ve been meaning to check out the 14mm f2.8, I’ll see if I can get a review unit in.

I’m using a set of old Olympus OM primes (28, 50, 135) for my EOS M and I’m very happy with the results for video.

Planning on doing these on a more regular bases. Also going to start doing some question and answer videos. Hopefully I can spend a little more time interacting with you guys.

Bought Canon Eos M recently for documentary purpose… I opted for the 18-55 lens kit because I was fascinated by the control of the new IS system in a hand held situation.
Reality is that IS works very well and it seems to have almost a steady cam.
However, indoor situations are a real problem, with 1600 ISO almost unreachable and often not enough with f3.5 of the lens.
I had to buy the 22mm f2 to gain 2 stop.
