11Aug Azden SGM-2X shotgun microphone with windscreen
I have a few old shotgun microphones laying around but a few of them like the Azden SGM-2X don’t get used much. The SGM-2x is a good entry level boom mic with the option to power the mic from a AAA battery and switchable end adapters to change the pickup pattern from Supercardioid to Omni.
If you’re interested, you can buy my Azden SGM-2x with shock mount and extra fuzzy windscreen for $150 plus $5 shipping. Retail is $229 so that seems like a pretty good discount, but if no one is interested, it’ll be on ebay sometime next week. If you have any questions just let me know.

Did you ever find an easy solution for bringing up the gain on this mic when used with the H4N? I would have liked something like the rode powerplug (discontinued) but didn’t want to go as far as to install another art preamp just to get the gain up on this thing.

I had the same preamp issue with a dr100 mark 2 and the rode ntg2. I ended up buying a ntg3 and problem solved but this was another option I looked at http://www.tritonaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category§ionid=4&id=17&Itemid=33
While more expensive, I figured the ntg3 was a better long term solution as its a better mic and don’t need additional gear that would weigh down a boom pole.

That looks like a pretty handy little adapter. I’ll have to check it out.

Definitely agree with Paul. Best to go with a better mic with more sensitivity and/or a better recorder with better preamps than to add another item in the line. The H4 has pretty noisy preamps.

Deejay, have you plugged the SGM2x directly into the t2i using magic lantern and an xlr to 3.5mm adaptor?

I wouldn’t recommend that. The signal from the microphone isn’t strong enough to be plugged directly into your camera.

Also Deejay, where did you get the fuzzy windscreen?

The windscreen came from another mic that was damage. Not sure if it came with the that microphone or was an after market buy. There isn’t any tag on the windscreen, sorry.

how far away can you be from the mic and still be heard clearly without having to boost the audio in post?

So many questions have come up about this microphone, that I think i’ll put together a full post and review before I put it up on ebay. Post your testing request here and I’ll run them in the review.

Im not sure about proximity for gain but my experience with the Azden sgm-1000 is that you need to be pretty close to the subject or you will get a lot of blended sound without a lot of directional separation. If there is a lot of background noise, you’ll want to get as close as possible.
