It only took one month from the time the Magic Lantern team announced the Canon 7d hack solution to the day they were able to release the alpha version of Magic Lantern for the 7d. The progress so far looks good. Even though this is only an alpha, the team has already managed to incorporate some of the core features Magic Lantern has to offer.

The biggest improvement is on screen audio meters. I know that many of you record dual system sound, but sometimes it’s simply easier to record directly to the camera if you can. This might not produce the highest audio quality possible, but many times it’s more then acceptable when capturing talking heads or other none complex dialog. Add to that a pre amp and many people would have trouble telling the difference between a recording made on a Zoom h4n and in camera recording.

This release of Magic Lantern is still in alpha, so you will need to load the firmware file into the camera each time you want to use the features. No boot flag is set in the camera and if you run into any problems you can simply shut the camera down and turn it back on to bring it back to it’s normal state. I’ve been using this firmware update for a little less then a week and have yet to run into any problems.
