08Dec GoPro Hero 3 black edition cellphone tethering delayed
The first thing I tried to play around with this morning was controlling the Hero 3 with my cellphone. I installed the app, enabled wifi on the Hero 3 and got no connection. So I fumbled around in the pdf manual for a little while and found a section that says there is supposed to be a “phone & tablet” selection in the wifi menu.
So I looked around on the GoPro site and found this disclaimer.
GoPro app compatibility for the Black edition will be available on December 14, 2012.
It’s a little irritating when a “feature” is listed all over the packaging and on the website, but when you actually try to use it you find out that you’ll have to wait for a firmware update. December 14th isn’t that far off so it’s not a huge deal, but it is a little frustrating that I wont be able to test it out right away.
On a positive note, I was able to test out low light performance last night and in my first few tests it seems that the Hero 3 black edition in 2.7k mode kept up pretty well with the Canon t2i in terms of low light performance. By the time you scale the image down from 2.7k to 1080p it might even be a little bit better. I’ll post some comparison shots once I’ve done a little more testings but right now it’s looking very impressive. I’ll keep you posted.

Do you really plan on shooting at 2.7k? Isn’t it only at 15fps at that resolution?

No, the 2.7k format supports 24 fps and 30 fps (29.97). If you run stabilizer on the footage at 2.7k then drop the footage into a 1080p timeline you can motion stabilize without any loss of resolution. Giving you a very handy software steady cam.

I saw your post yesterday about testing the app and was going to say something but couldn’t remember if all the features were restricted or just live mode. I preordered the Hero3 the night it went up and was also frustrated that the Black edition would not be supported by the app for so long. The 14th is close though and I also got the notice that my wasabi battery 2 pack I preordered a few weeks ago have shipped. It’s all coming together now.
Elliot the 15fps is the restriction of shooting 4K. 2.7k can do 30 or 24fps.

I should have paid a little more attention to the description when I pre-ordered. So far It’s still been pretty impressive, I also ordered the wasabi 2 pack, less then the price of single battery and a stand alone charge seems like a good deal.

DeeJay, I just updated my GoPro firmware and the apps works fine on my iPhone. I played with it for 10 minutes before realizing it is practically useless for realtime monitoring. There is a 5 second delay in both 2.7k and 1080p. With Protune enabled, it will show a preview, but not while recording.
The app might be useful for certain things, but I prefer the RC remote.
Now, if you could figure out how to use the HDMI out tethered to the iPhone/Nexus7, that would be cool.

tried the app on my nexus 7. bugs. there is no option to change the resolution above 1080p. and when you try to change it, it locks up the gopro and you’ll need to remove the battery. granted i have an earlier batch, so yours may work, but you still can’t change the resolution to 2.7k. also, if your gopro is set to 2.7k, the video preview doesn’t work, it displays colored lines only.
let me know if you experience the same. the android app is dated Nov.17, so they must not have released the latest app for android. i’m running android 4.2 on my nexus 7.

12/14/12… Downloaded the latest firmware for the Hero 3 Black Edition and the app still doesn’t work on either my Android phone or Ipad. Of course there is no documentation anywhere to be found regarding the implementation of this latest update.
I’m also very frustrated with the misleading advertisement of this particular model.

Yea the gopro website is kind of a joke.
