31Mar Canon 5d mark III ALL-I playback outside your NLE
I haven’t had any problems editing the footage from the 5d mark III, but none of the normal programs I use for playback would handle the footage. I’ve been told the latest version of VLC player can handle it, but I dislike VLC player with a passion. Nothing but a pain every time I’ve tried to use it, even though most people I know think its great.
I posted the question on my youtube channel and SamjTeleVision asked if I had tried MPEG StreamClip. Above is actually a shot from one of the low light test I was working on yesterday and MPEG StreamClip handled it just fine. The program is less then a 1MB, it didn’t try to install any random crap on my computer and it works with the 5d mark III’s native ALL-I footage.
The player also seems to do a great job with every other format I’ve tried out and it supports both Windows and Mac machines. To top that off the software is also free. The website is a little old school, but if you need a light weight video player that works with Canon footage, MPEG StreamClip is worth a look. Here’s a link to their site.

Hey DeeJay,
Great review (just watched the video too)!
Just to let you know, I also had lots of problems with VLC… specially when I switched to Windows 7 64bit, but now it’s working just fine.
Dunno how bad goes the trauma level to you though. xD
MPEG StreamClip is fine though… for quite a while it was the software to go to convert 1080p AVCHD videos before Adobe CS5 came out.

VLC was locking up my editing computer and would crashing my raid drive whenever I used to to play a file. Even when it worked the audio wouldn’t sync up with the video properly. It would also screw up the audio settings when I had PP CS5.5 open. I have no love for VLC.

MPEG Streamclip tastes great AND is less filling. A fine piece of lightweight software that others should think of emulating.

MPEG Streamclip is one of THE best free video tools you can get your hands on. It has saved my ass so many times I sometimes cannot believe its freeware. I tell all my students to get it and learn what it can do.
It even speeds up my editing workflow. I export a non-selfcontained movie from FCP, and then bring it into MPEG Streamclip for export, so it doesnt created downtime due to exporting. Its much easier and quicker than using compressor.
