29Apr Magic Lantern firmware in the works for the Canon 5d mark III
With the resent release of Canon’s 5d mark III firmware update, the Magic Lantern Team is now able to start work on a firmware hack. But what do you add to a camera that has most of the video features we’ve come to expect?
Here’s my wish list.
- Clean 1080p hdmi output
- Focus peaking
- Histogram in video mode
- Time laps features
- 5x and 10x zoom while recording video
The other feature we can hope for is 4k motion JPEG at 24p. It’s hard to say if this can be done on the 5d mark III. The yet to be released Canon 1dC has Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors to handle 4k footage, while the 5dMK3 only has a single DIGIC 5+ processor. That might not be enough to handle 4k video. It seems possible that each DIGIC 5+ processor handles half of the 4k video stream and that a single DIGIC 5+ only handles about 2k worth of footage.
At the very least, the current list of Magic Lantern features should run better on the new faster processor and any added features will be welcome among most 5d mark III owners. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Hi,
I have tried installing Magic lantern to my 5DMll and it never seems to work right.
The ML keeps flickering back and forth with Canon’s firmware. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Is the 5x and 10x zoom really in the firmware? I thought it was something that had to do with the actual hardware of camera.
I just put ml on my T2i, can it do the 10x or 5x zoom in video mode (like the t3i)?

I’m using ML version 11.22.22 on my t2i. Doing 5x or 10x zoom whilst recording in video mode currently does NOT work.
I set the shot up, use 5x or 10x to find the perfect focus and THEN hit record.

Considering the amount of Magic Lantern users there are and the massive benefits ML brings, it seems to me it’s in Canons best interest to allow its firmware to be exploited.
Magic Lantern has really helped me get more usage out of my Canon 550D. But I really want a 5D. Knowing that Magic Lantern works just as good on the 5D II gives me a reason to want one even more. I’ll give the 5D III a bit more time, see how it’s really being received. And to allow time for Magic Lantern to be implemented.
