With the resent release of Canon’s 5d mark III firmware update, the Magic Lantern Team is now able to start work on a firmware hack. But what do you add to a camera that has most of the video features we’ve come to expect?

Here’s my wish list.

  • Clean 1080p hdmi output
  • Focus peaking
  • Histogram in video mode
  • Time laps features
  • 5x and 10x zoom while recording video

The other feature we can hope for is 4k motion JPEG at 24p. It’s hard to say if this can be done on the 5d mark III. The yet to be released Canon 1dC has Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors to handle 4k footage, while the 5dMK3 only has a single DIGIC 5+ processor. That might not be enough to handle 4k video. It seems possible that each DIGIC 5+ processor handles half of the 4k video stream and that a single DIGIC 5+ only handles about 2k worth of footage.

At the very least, the current list of Magic Lantern features should run better on the new faster processor and any added features will be welcome among most 5d mark III owners. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
